The programs are intended to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in rural areas.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded $11 million to 15 rural communities to help them establish new medical residency programs. Nearly 70 percent of areas currently experiencing a shortage of healthcare professionals are rural communities.
The development of local doctoral training programs is intended to help aspiring healthcare professionals learn more about rural healthcare and encourage them to remain in rural healthcare.
“Training residents in rural areas leads more medical school graduates to stay and practice in rural settings,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. “There’s a shortage of doctors across the nation, especially in our most underserved communities, and these rural residency development grants will help address this shortage.”
